Happy birthday of dog

Today I needed to post about photographer Akihiro Furuta. He takes these amazing family portraits, too good for words. THAT DOG is unbelievable. I wonder what breed he is?

Prepare to flip out over these photos.

Sandy Smith

Above is a piece by Sandy Smith. I really enjoy it; I am a sucker for text based art, especially when it is a precious notion. What if someone put this out on your lawn?

Cats & Kittens

Recently I drew 50 cats (forced production, during a time of no ideas.)
They are roughly 4 x 5 inches. All of my drawings are done with pen,
no edits. These are a few of them. Click on to enlarge. Please buy for any cat lovers.

Art that You Should See

This show looks super amazing. Portland is too far from me to see it in person, but online images alone make me a little wild. (If you live in Portland you should go see.)

Really fun idea for a show and I wish I had a spare $300 dollars!

Dream House

When I was a little girl the Barbie Dream House was passed down to me from my aunt. While hunting on e.bay for project items I came across it, "buy it now" price of close to $250. Seeing the house flooded my brain with memories, like remembering again the pink plastic vanity with the reflective sticker for a mirror, the slatted push out windows and the divided 3 sections of the house. It is strange to come across something from childhood that once provided a wealth of storytelling. I would spend hours & hours alone in my room thinking up stories for Barbie & each of the characters. People often look down on Barbie, what she stands for as a cultural icon, I have plenty of friends that brag about not having played with Barbies, but Barbie was a huge part of how I grew into being a creative person. Sure, if Barbie was a real person her doll body to real body ratio would render her unlivable, but she is a doll and at 8 years old she is just a means of transport for an active imagination!

Julia Pott

This morning was spent looking at blogs and eating pancakes in my bed.
I discovered artist, Julia Pott, who's work is quite magical.
This animation of hers really made my day:

By Just Your Being You.

One of my favorite pieces of video is this one here. It is Fred Rogers talking to the U.S. Senate in an attempt to gain more funds for Public Broadcasting. It is really heartfelt and moving.

He's Always Closing His Eyes, Like it Hurts to Look at Things

I tried to pick just one video for this post, but I had to include a video with "Late at Night" by Buffalo Tom. It is the quintessential My So Called Life soundtrack song. It reminds me of how I felt watching the episode where Jordon goes public with Angela (!) He was such a lowdown dog, but when I was 13 I thought he was so aloof with that leather band around his neck.

I watch 'My So Called Life' every single morning while I am getting dressed and ready for work. Something about this show is my ultimate comfort. Maybe because it is pure nineties. I thought about making a list of all the things I love(d) about the nineties, but it would be too long. It comes in flashes. Like certain songs and bands. Poe. Dishwalla. Primitive Radio Gods. Luscious Jackson. White Town. Duncan Sheik. Sugar. Some bands that you really loved and some that just had certain songs that passed through. Everything seemed so unpretentious and open. Maybe the time was just right for me (10-20 years old), but the style seemed very pick and choose. Thinking of that in a time where fashion & trends seem based on the bourgeois. No more shows like 'My So Called Life,' but now only reality tv about rich girls.

I miss flannels and baggy jeans.

I'll probably blog about the 90's repeatedly. My nostalgia for this time is just overwhelming.

Since changing locals I have felt utterly uninspired. All of my drawings feel stiff and I have no love for them. What do you do to clear this away? Any ideas?

Also, on a more superficial note, I need advice on clothing.
I was told at my job on Friday "no jeans." Since I hate "slacks" I don't want to spend too much money on them. I am looking for links to cheap clothes. I would like one of those over-sized cardigans as well.

ADVISE ME.

Tim & Eric Great Job!

One of my favorite things is Tim & Eric. Tim & Eric is a show
on Adult Swim - Cartoon Network. The first season is coming
out on disc on April 22nd! I've included a clip below. It is the
best of Brule's Rules, which is a favorite segment of mine on
Tim & Eric.

I love Chloe.

I love Chloe Sevigny.
She reminds me of everything I love(d) about the nineties.
Her new clothing line with Opening Ceremony represents the unpretentious fashion sense of the 90's decade with floral baby doll dresses and ripped tights.
I long for those days.

I also recently watched the Smog video for 'I Feel Like the Mother of the World' -- starring Miss Sevigny and it is great.

Black is all colors at one time.

Sandwich I made tonight:

2 pieces of quality bread.
1/4 avocado.
1/4 c. black beans.
2 tbspns salsa.
handful shredded sharp cheddar.
cream cheese (enough to coat one side of the inside of the bread) i use tofutti.
butter for the outside of the bread.

Put all of these ingredients together and cook like a grilled cheese in a pan with butter
and a spatula.

Now I think I am going to go watch 'Friends with Money'
which stars two of my favorite actresses, Francis McDormand and Catherine Keener.
